t
was the fourth day of
the security breach, when Melinda and her co-workers, were summons from
their sleep area in the basement of the office building, for a team
briefing.
Melinda was still dazed, due to lack of sleep, but washed her
face and prepared herself for the briefing.
Once all 24 agent/analysis were assembled, in the conference room, a middle age, small
frame woman, walked into the room and stood at the head of the table.
She commanded attention, yet never really introduced herself.
She begin by explaining, the breach in security, and why it was
important to locate the person, or persons, responsible for placing
classified government information about agents and analysis, onto an
unclassified website.
The woman, who still did not
introduce herself, yet had the authority, to summons, secret agents, and
high level analysis, to an emergency briefing, suddenly stopped
speaking. She paused for a
second, and, then asked, “Have any of you ever heard of the name, Zphera?”
Melinda’s heart skipped
a beat. She remained silent
and hoped that her inner emotions had not shown on her face.
Zphera, was the secret password, which Scott had given her to
access special files, should anything happen to him.
He had assured Melinda that no one else, had the password, and
had hinted, no one else ever would.
That had been his way of making a commitment.
Melinda’s body knew
what it took several seconds, for her mind to process.
Scott had found her.
He knew exactly where she was.
This was a serious offense, which he could go to federal prison
for. Melinda felt chills, as
the briefing continued.
The IIA’s job was to
investigate keywords, conversations, chat room conversations, email and
any other online communications, deemed a threat to National Security.
They were a little different than your day to day computer nerd, because
of their classification and authority to actually travel to foreign
locations and capture detailed information on individuals considered to
be a threat to the US Government.
They were not authorized to engage, only to observe and report.
It had been one of their own daily searches and summary reports,
which had found the web page with all 24 IIA agent’s and support
analysis’s personal information, including their home addresses.
The briefing revealed,
that it didn’t appear that any unauthorized, groups had accessed the
information, and the event, was believed to be the work of US hackers.
The IP addresses affiliated with the cyber attack, started in
Canada, then showed up in Europe, and a few other locations, including Los Angeles, New York,
and Rio, before disappearing in Hong Kong.
The IIA network was not
directly linked to “the Agency,” for security reasons.
And this was the reason given, for the security not being up to
Agency standards.
Things returned to normal,
once everyone on staff moved into new living quarters. Melinda knew
better, than to believe the hackers had gotten away.
She understood all too well how the US Government would take it's
time
to slowly build a case, long after everyone involved, believed the case
was closed or forgotten.
Because, the Feds
couldn’t figure out how the security breach occurred, or even when it
occurred, a Government
Pre-solicitation, was generated, to find computer science consultants,
who might be familiar with the MO of this latest group of hackers
A team from the University of Denver, was awarded the contract, and would be arriving in Washington DC, within 30 days, from the time the information was shared with the IIA staff.
A few of the top US students who had previously graduated
from the prestigious university of Denver computer program, were summons, by their Instructor, for the
temporary assignment.
During this time,
Scott
was dealing with the ex-girlfriend drama.
The woman he had been with for four years, before meeting
Melinda, lied about him being the father of the newborn.
Yet he couldn’t force himself to put her out of his home, and
onto the streets. She had
left after he revealed that he knew the child wasn’t his, and she had
returned a week later explaining that she didn’t have any place to go.
As it turned out, the baby’s biological, father, was married.
Scott wanted his
approach to Melinda, to be transparent, honest and straight forward.
Now, his ex was back into his household and nothing had changed,
since the last time he saw Melinda.
He felt, a small amount of obligation to his ex. He understood her actions to entrap him into marriage. Yet his heart, was in pain over Melinda. He had told Melinda’s parents that he loved her, and wanted to marry her. Now, there appeared to be a dilemma.
Melinda knew she would see Scott soon. She didn’t know when or where. The word “Zephers” kept ringing in her head. Her concern, over the magnitude of the unspoken crime, worried her more than she realized. If it were known, that she was connected to someone, responsible for high-tech crimes against the US Government, it would not only destroy her career, it would tarnish her family’s name. The thought of this sicken her. She loved Scott, but she was freighten.
And, for this reason,
when she finally did see Scott, a month later, in the hall way of her
work place, she decided to act as
if she didn’t know him. Scott instantly, realized this was a huge
mistake on Melinda's part and quickly ran over to embrace her.
He understood her first reaction.
The slowest Government
Investigator on staff would have been able to uncovered, that he and
Melinda had once dated.
Trying to hide their pass, would be an admission of guilt.
Yet in his heart, Scott
was satisfied, that Melinda was ready to let go of the relationship.
Melinda’s legs buckled
as Scott hugged her.
His team members, looked on with interest, as did her co-workers.
Small talk was exchanged, as was contact information and a
promise of dinner later that evening.
Scott whispered into
Melinda’s ear, “Go with the flow.”
Melinda was shaken, yet
she felt, once again, the comfort of Scott’s guidance.
Once she returned to her desk, she thought about what had just
occurred and, realized, Scott was right.
To have acted as if they didn’t know each other would have been a
hugh mistake.
Scott, meet Melinda for
dinner, as planned, and brought alone, two of his team members.
This was an enormous relief to Melinda. The four experienced a
delicious sea food dinner, wine and good conversation, at the
Black Salt
Restaurant, in Washington DC, before, calling it a night.
Scott offered to escort
Melinda home, and for this she was elated.
Finally, they could be alone.
Small talk, between Scott and Melinda, continued during the cab
ride to Melinda’s new apartment, and even up until Melinda unlocked her
front door. She walked in,
and Scott followed.
No words were
exchanged. They both started
to undress, unleashing the love force from months of being apart.
Scott felt as if he was about to burst, and fully wanted to
explain his current situation, but Melinda, was intent on experiencing
Scott’s manhood.
It was cool in
Washington, on this summer evening, however, the temperature in Melinda’s
apartment increased dramatically.
Scott was bent on telling Melinda the truth, but Melinda didn’t
want to hear words. They
both felt the internal explosion, which occurred again and again, until,
neither had the strength to speak.
Around 12:30 AM, Scott,
sat up and said, “I probably should go, they may be watching.”
Melinda, said nothing.
Scott showered, dressed and left, quietly out of the front door.
No words were necessary.
Scott and his team
remained in Washington for three weeks.
Once the problem was resolved and explained, (or erased) Scott returned home.
His still loved Melinda, but for now, it was a love that couldn’t
be.
