A Love That Couldn't Be .......

An Inter-Racial Love Story

Melinda-Against-All-Odds
Melinda had left Denver abruptly.  The newly, classified agency, within the agency, had arranged for her move from Denver to Washington, DC.  She, nor any of the other, 23 agent and analysis, had been allowed to say good-by to friends, or  co-workers.

AAO-Scott

Scott, the man she had been dating, for almost 5 months, had NOT, been placed on the special list, to be notified of her new location.  And, now, every day her heart hurt, for the man she had walked away from, without so much as a good by.

She remembered, clearly, the events which lead to their separation........  A month before she even knew that she had been accepted for the job,  Scott had informed her that his ex-girlfriend had returned to Denver, and was pregnant with his child.  He had asked Melinda to give him time to work through the situation before making any decisions.

Melinda remembered the disappointment and emotional pain, she had felt.  She was the first to admit that she acted without thinking.  She had no idea that her mind would say one thing, and her heart would later say another.

Scott was a Computer Science Professor at the University of Denver.  They had meet at a, technology workshop, in New York City.  When they realized that they were both from Denver, they started to hang out together. and eventually became good friends.  It had not taken long, before the friendship evolved into a personal relationship.

It had been a relationship of mutual respect, friendship, trust and passionate love making.  Melinda remembered that she had been completely happy with Scott, until the ex-girlfriend drama.

Scott made every effort to assure Melinda, that the event was a passing phase, within their relationship, and encouraged her to have faith.   That was six months ago.  She had not spoken to, nor seen Scott since that day.

A couple of days, after Scott’s upsetting news, Melinda’s father, had called to give her the news that she had been selected for one of the high tech, classified positions, in Washington DC.  The position, with the IIA, International Information Agency, was a  classified spin off, from, “the Agency.”  That is, until confidential information, about the new department and the staff, was published on a popular, non-government website.

Malinda's thoughts slowly returned to the present situation.

Now, her new job’s cover had been blown, the IIA agents and analysis, were ordered to report to work, with a toothbrush, and a change of clothes. The building and, staff were placed in lock down status.  No one was permitted to leave and all cell phones had to be turned in for replacements.  Melinda had read about incidents, such as this, but she had never expected to be personally involved, in a US breach of security, especially one as severe as this.

The IIA’s job, was to analyze, report, and investigate Internet, activity, information, and communications, which might have an adverse affect, on Homeland Security. The department operated, as a shadow, of one’s imagination.  And because they never showed up, on anyone’s, budget, they had remained, undetected, at least until now.

Back in Denver, Scott was experiencing the same intense, distraught feelings, as Melinda.  A, DNA test, had confirmed, what he had known all alone. The child, his ex-girlfriend gave birth to, was not his.  He had suspected this because of his low sperm count, due to a childhood illness.  This was the same illness, which resulted in him becoming, a computer nerd, rather, than an accomplished athlete.

He had played the “new daddy” game, while having the child’s DNA, tested.  Even, after, he knew, the truth, he still helped his ex through the first month, of being a new Mom.  When he finally, told his ex that he knew the baby wasn’t his, she too left his life, but not for long.

Scott was determined to find Melina, and realized, from her families reaction to her disappearance, that she had simply, relocated.  What he didn’t understand, was why would Melinda, quite her IT position, with a Fortune 500 company, and simple, re-locate.

-------- start here to continue from article

Scott had shown up, unannounced, at the home of Melinda’s father, General Lufkin.  He explained to Melinda’s parents, that he love their daughter, and wanted to extend his hand in marriage.  He then asked General Lufkin, for help in locating Melinda.

General Lufkin was first to speak, and said “Absolutely not.”  He then politely walked towards the front door.  Scott’s heart dropped.  He looked to Mrs. Lufkin, for support.  He could tell from her reaction, that she didn't share her husband's  feelings.

Scott slowly reached into his sport jacket’s pocket and brought out a business card, which he slowly handed to General. Lufkin.  He then followed the General to the front door.

Mrs. Lufkin’s reaction, must have registered with the General, because, at the front door, he looked Scott in the eye, and said, “Agency spin off.”  And just like that, the door closed.

Scott sat in his car for a long moment, before starting the car.  He had to protect the information, he had just received, and, he had to be sure, of what his next move would be. Finally, he started the car.  He knew he would see Melinda again, even if he had to park outside the Lufkin home on Christmas Day.

But he had a better idea.

As he slowly drove to the Interstate, for the long drive back to Denver, he had no doubt that he would see Melinda again.  Being a Computer Science Professor, at the University of Denver, had it’s benefits.  Piercing firewalls, was his hobby.  Covering up his hobby, was his passion, and teaching computer science students, what he knew, was his job.

After the long drive from, Phoenix, Arizona, Scott made himself a cup of tea and booted up his laptop.  He began to prepare a proposal, for computer security consulting for “the Agency.”  He was, after all, one of the world’s most well known, Computer Science Professors.  In fact, he had been the Instructor for some of the same people “the Agency” had hired!  The right proposal, from the University of Denver, with his name on it, surely would generate some interest, especially after he implemented the second half of his plan.
