For parents and kids who have a major concern over the cost of college, there are alternatives which can pay off big. The first step would be to truly figure out what you like to do. If you like what you are doing, chances are you will be extremely successful.

You would be surprised at how many people make enormous salaries or income, from small business, who do not “enjoy” what they are doing. This leads to a dead end at some point. Liking what you do, is the "edge" which can beat out the competition.

If you are analytical, you may want to research which job industries need help and in which area. If you make decisions from the heart, chances are you already know what makes you happy, now all you have to do is stay focused and go for it.

Some suggestions are as follows:

1. Tax Accountant or Enrolled Agent

In California tax professionals who study for and pass the Enrolled Agent’s Exam earn anywhere from $75 to $150 per hour. To get started it helps if you get registered with your state tax agency and the Department of Treasury, IRS. In 2010 the cost was about $64. You will have to pass an efficiency test, but if numbers, tax laws and how it all works is something you enjoy, it will be a breeze. (An enrolled agent is a person who has earned the privilege of practicing, before the Internal Revenue Service, sort of like an Attorney)

However, passing the Enrolled Agent exam is a different story. You will have to know tax codes for Individual and Businesses taxes inside and out. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t pass the first time. Persistence is the name of the game, when qualifying for $100 an hour, without a college degree.

2. Microsoft / Cisco Certification

Here you can choose from a variety of options. Microsoft Certification is recognized worldwide. You will be qualified to work in almost any free country in the world. The cost for online computer training starts at about $80 USD and goes up to around $300 and more in some cases. Students must be independent and self-motivate.

Different IT Specialist earn in the high 5 figure range per year, while some who work for larger companies earn in the 6 figure range.

Computer security is an industry worth taking a look at. Even the US Government is looking for independent contractors who can help to keep government agency web sites secure.

3.Sales / Account Executive

Some of the highest earners in the large companies, besides the Vice-presidents and the CEOs, are the Account Executives. Sales is not the favorite career solution for many, however, if you have the desire to sell, then you owe it to yourself to investigate.

Account Executives for Invoice Lines of Credit, anything having to do with Construction, high priced ticket items, including homes, aircraft, multi-million dollars contracts, property lease for commercial buildings, etc. all pay exceptionally well. This choice is not recommended, unless you have a special “calling” to be in sales.

4. Construction / Carpentry (male & female)

Learn skilled trades at an accredited trade school which has a placement program. You will need to do some research on the school in your area. Traveling to a nearby school , which has a successful track record in placement of graduates throughout their career can be an alternative.

5. Open a Small Business

Find a need and provide a service or product at a reduced price.  Avoid raising your prices when making a profit and care about your clients/customers. It’s that simple!
