Undercover cop Terrence La Vine was no
stranger to large sums of cash, but this was different. Over $5 million
dollars was sitting on the coffee table, one dead king pin slumped over
on the couch, and no witnesses. Every since he had become a player in
the uncover operation he fully realized that he had gone too far.
Russo DaLatina, the deceased apparently had
died of heart failure. Detective La Vine, was assuming that the cause of
death was heart failure due to DaLatina’s hand clutch over his heart.
Detective Lawrence Duggan, his real name, was
a decorated law enforcement officer with the Los Angeles Police
Department (LAPD), yet as time grew closer to bring down one of Southern
California’s largest illegal substance, organizations, Lawrence Duggan,
aka Terrence La Vine was placed in compromising positions which had
compromised his ability to do his job effectively. Now, after two years
of undercover work, he had stopped and picked up the ice, which was his
reason for leaving his niece's birthday party, after Russo, one of Los
Angeles top king pins, had called and demanded that he come to the house
immediately.
Upon entering Russo's home, he found
Russo's
body. The odd thing was there were no bodyguards, and Joey, the
rock wilder, was gone.
La Vine’s thoughts begin to race as he
calculated how he could save face on his job and satisfy the pain in his
heart, at the same time. Could he take most of the money and not be a
suspect? Where were the bodyguards? Where was the dog? Who knew Russo
would be counting money? Had Russo called him because he was having a
heart attack?
Detective Duggan, aka La Vine, had to have
all the answers before, making a decision.
La Vine made a telephone call to
Russo's chief
security officer, Benny, and learned that Russo had given the security
team a couple hours off. Joey, the guard dog was with the group, and
they would be returning in a couple of hours.
La vine, didn’t alert Benny to the most
recent events. He lied, saying that he was at his niece’s birthday
party. He quickly hung up the phone before Russo's security man could ask
any questions. He knew, Benny would call, Russo and when there was
no answer, he would hurry back to the estate.
La Vine, stuffed $4 million into a black bag
that was on the floor. He deliberately left $1 million on the coffee
table, and started to look around for the hidden camera, he knew Russo
kept in the living room. Once he found the camera, he carefully erased
the previous eighteen hours of recordings, alone with his finger prints.
He then looked around for any other recording devices and to see if he
had forgotten anything.
At that moment, the phone rang. He noticed that there has been almost a five minute delay in the time that he spoke to Benny and the time that he called the estate. La Vine allowed the phone to ring, as he slipped out the front door, being careful as not to be seen by neighbors.
La Vine, made his way back to his sister’s
house with a dripping bag of ice.
------------------------------------------------------
The afternoon birthday party, with screaming 10 year olds was no picnic, but it wasn’t the ten year olds that frighten Duggan the most. He had to see Maria after he left his sister’s house. He needed to give her time to learn what happened to Russo. This was the meeting that he was nervous about, and no amount of department training could have prepare him for this meeting.
Maria had been with
Russo since she was
fifteen. Her mother had sold her daughter to Russo for a fix. Maria was
one of the most mature young women he had ever met. And even though she
was supposed to be Russo's private property, La Vine had fallen one
hundred percent in love with her.
Except for the fact that she was a criminal,
who did all of the scheduling for the organization, she was a perfect
mate for La Vine. A tall woman, 5’11”, with curves in all the right
places. Her large breast and small waist was always key in getting him
excited in and out of bed. Maria spoke four languages and was
exceptionally bright for not ever having completed high school. Russo had
insisted that she have a home tutor, where she learned computer skills,
and two additional languages, German and French.
Their relationship was complex. Maria was
just as much in love with him, as he was with her. She risked her life
to be with La Vine, and he fully understood what kind of commitment that
took on her part. Russo would have killed them both, had he found out.
Maria, loved to cook, in the small hidden
apartment that they had rented in a low income part of Los Angeles. It
wasn’t often that they would get to meet, but when they did, it was
special for both of them. About twice a month, Russo would leave town for
a couple days. This was always a time when he and Maria could meet and
play house for a couple of days.
Later that afternoon, La Vine headed for the small apartment in East L.A. Once he arrived, he was satisfied to see that Maria had arrived before him. He opened the front door and she rushed into his arms, happy to see him, yet terrified about the events of the day. After a passionate kiss the couple sat on the bed to discuss the day’s events and compare notes.
Maria knew Russo was dead and was frantic
because the money was missing. She was so nervous that her
hand was shaking. We can’t get any information from the police. All we
know is, he wasn’t shot or stabbed.
Benny had called the police when he found
Russo, but had to sweep the house of any evidence that would incriminate
them. So it had been late afternoon, before the police were notified.
La Vine asked Maria, very softly, how did they know, money was missing?
She responded, in tears, because
there has been a drop and there has to be cash. Russo had wanted to be alone,
so he could plan for the organization's future.
Maria then cried that she didn’t know what to
do. She didn’t have a job, and all of her money was tied up with Russo's
and since they weren't legally married, she would get nothing.
Maria’s tears lead to La Vine, stroking her
hair and making an effort to comfort her. Their touching turned into
love making. From tears, to passion, to making sweet love on perfumed
sheets in a cheap apartment on the East side of Los Angeles, the couple
arrived at a point where they both knew they needed to talk.
La Vine, was in no hurry for the passion to
end, but he knew the department would be looking for him, especially
since they knew Russo was dead. He had to report in, and he had to come
clean with Maria and get her out of the country,
all within two hours.
He gentle held Maria as he explained the
facts. He held her close, so as not to allow her emotions to take
control over her. And also to keep her from shooting him with the small
pearl handle pistol she kept in her purse.
Much to his surprise, she was quite,
non-emotional and listened to his every word. He explained that when he
first join the group as an undercover police, he had listed her in his
weekly reports. And he couldn't figure out how to get her out of the
report without the police arresting her, so he had left her in the
reports.
Quickly, he explained that he had taken the
money so, she could get on a flight within a couple hours and he would
be in touch with her, and even might join her in time
Maria asked him to repeat the part about
having the $5 million dollars. And he corrected her and told her he had
only taken $4 million, and $1 million had been left on the table. He
then pointed to the black bag he had dropped at the door when she ran to
hug him.
Maria’s eyes sparkled, and just as quickly,
she began to cry. When will I see you again?
Detective Lawrence Duggan, hugged her and
promised her that it would be soon. He also explained that he would
implement that she had taken the money and disappeared. She understood,
and went into the rest room to clean herself up.
Maria always carried her passport, so there
was no problem to leave the country in a hurry. They decided that
she would take a bus to San Diego, and then take the red trolley to the
Tijuana boarder, where she would walk across the boarder with a couple
hundred thousand dollars, or as much as she could carry. She
would establish several bank accounts and then take a bus deeper into
Mexico where, she would eventually take a flight from Mexico to an
unknown International destination.
The couple agreed to continue to communicate
the same way they had when Russo was alive, and that Detective Duggan
would return to the police force and be a normal police officer, until
he could arrange a suitable termination, before joining Maria in a
location to be determined later.
Maria’s job was to change her identity,
change her finger prints, have her face and her fingers re-constructed.
She understood that these procedures would be painful, and she would be
alone, but this would be the only way, that she could avoid prison.
Detective Duggan told her to hire a trustworthy maid to help her through
the process and to spend as little time as possible in the hospital.
The couple kissed for the last time, before
La Vine drove her to the L.A. Greyhound Bus station to board a bus for
San Diego.
After the Greyhound Bus pulled off, La Vine,
carefully packed the balance of the money into a locker at the Bus
station.
He placed the key into his pocket and headed back home, where he would meet with his handler, and prepare the necessary reports to indicted Russo's gang. He had always been a good policeman, a good citizen, and a good person. He was not proud of what he had just done, but he realized that the heart wants what the heart wants, and his heart wanted Maria.
He could live another day, knowing that he
had done everything in his power to ensure her safety, even if it meant
breaking the law. Sure he had known the rules and sure he knew how to
play the game, but somewhere in those crucial moments, Maria had gotten
close to his heart. For that he was not ashamed.
Upon returning back to work, Detective Duggan, did what was expected of him. He completed the necessary reports necessary for the department to issue arrest warrants to Russo's gang and his undercover contacts.
He then checked in with the department’s
therapist to set up routine sessions before she would sign off on him
returning to active duty.
He fully realized that he had no intension of
passing the psychotherapy screening. And he would not be allowed to
return to full duty until he did. Terrence Duggan would experience
four, five maybe six months of depression, before asking for a medical
leave.
He would be watched. He would be screened,
questioned and re-questioned. But he was ready. He didn't have to worry
about accusations concerning stolen money, he had left money on the
table, and it had disappeared. Within seven months he
would join Maria, where ever she was in the world. He would live out his
life with the woman he loved.
Maria, had risked so much for him, her safety
and her life, now it was his turn, and he was determined to do no less.
